It is with great sorrow that I have to tell you that Avery has passed away. She passed away on April 30, 2012. I am in tears that this amazing little girl has left us and gone to heaven. There are no words to express how sad I am that she is gone. Here is words from her father on her blog.

Hello everyone this is Avery’s father. Avery passed away yesterday sometime around 3pm due to pulmonary complications related to SMA. In short, one of her lungs collapsed and she went into cardiac arrest. I immediately performed CPR on her and was able to bring her back to life, but only for a brief period of time before she passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital. Avery’s passing this quickly came as a complete shock to all of us, as she had just been given a thumbs up at her last doctors appointment only three days ago. While we were aware of the severity of her diagnosis, we never lost hope for Avery and even in her passing, we still have hope for our daughter and all of her friends. I’m going to share a note Avery gave me back when all of this started, but made me promise not to open until I knew the time was right…

Please keep the Canahuati Family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you and don’t forget to keep giving smiles.

Hey everyone! This tumblr is for a little girl named Avery. She has a deadly disorder called SMA or Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Here is a little insert from her blog:

What is SMA:SMA is the #1 genetic killer of infants & children under the age of 2, yet most people have never heard of it, most OB/GYN’s do not offer tests for it, and it’s not included when performing genetic pre-screening tests for other potential diseases & disorders. There is currently no cure and it attacks the muscles which causes inefficiency of the major bodily organs - especially of the respiratory system - and eventually leads to death. 1 in 40 people are carriers of the SMA gene. Meaning my mommy and daddy had a 1 in 1600 chance of both having it and even then there was only a 1 in 6400 chance I would get it.

Effects of SMA and My Life Expectancy:
I have already lost the ability to move my legs and eventually I will lose the ability to move my arms and my head. When that happens it will be difficult and eventually impossible for my body to pump air through my lungs which is why most babies, like me, who are diagnosed with SMA type 1 have a life expectancy of less than two years of age with some dying in as little as a few months or even weeks of birth. In some cases children like me can survive with the dependency of a respirator, but more often than not, our life expectancy is still less than ten years of age and even lasting past two years of life is not guaranteed.

On her blog she has put together a bucket list and one of the things on her list is to get a 1000 smiles. I though it would be a good idea to start this blog to help in her efforts. You can read more about little Avery over on her blog http://averycan.blogspot.com/.
